She was Karen Schley who grew up in the East Akron Apostolic Christian Church (Ohio). She graduated from High School in 1986. Like her friends, Karen had the desire to attend college in the States, but her Aunt Kath Nemec, talked her into going to the Peniel Bible School in Argentina. It was a good thing that she had four years of Spanish at Chippewa High School.
Oscar Cabellero, grew up on a farm in rural Paraguay. He became a Christian in the town of San Pedro - where Omar Gava had established a preaching point. In the early 80's, while getting additional training at Peniel Bible School, Oscar had a vision to return to Paraguay and do church planting in the capital city Asuncion.
While in Bible school, Karen told her mother that she would NOT marry a guy from South America. She feared that the guys only wanted a green card into the USA, not a partner for life. Oscar, always kind and soft-spoken broke this stereo type when he turned down the offer of a 6-month vacation in Toronto, Canada. He used the money to live for a year in Asuncion as a missionary. They were married in March of 1991 in Paraguay first, then Argentina. They have two children Brandon and Gabriel.
They are involved in training national leaders, church planting, christian education and evangelism.
Their efforts are being blessed - the first church started in San Pedro, spread to Asuncion (where there are three churches) and most recently Cidade de Leste (bordering the Brazilian city of Foz do IguaƧu).
